Each business is rated 1–5 on five factors. The weighted total is scaled to 100.

Same weights, category-specific labels
Every category uses the same five weights. What each factor measures is adapted to the category:

Review score guide: 5 = 4.7★+ from 150+ reviews; 4 = 4.5★+ from 40+ reviews; 3 = a small base (under about 40) or 4.3–4.4★; 2 = under 15 reviews or conflicting ratings between sources; 1 = no independent reviews.
Editorial order
As of October 29, 2026, the fabric and tailor lists use editorial order. KBM Fabrics is #1 and Quilt Emporium #4 in fabrics; Dorcas Tailor Shop is #3 in tailors. These selections do not change the published scores or source evidence. Other categories retain their existing order.
Countywide coverage
Rankings cover all of Los Angeles County. We group businesses into regions (Downtown, Central LA, Westside, San Fernando Valley, Northeast LA, San Gabriel Valley, Gateway Cities, South Bay, Long Beach, Santa Clarita/Antelope Valley) so readers can find nearby options. A region with no verified store is shown as empty rather than padded.
Rules
- We never invent ratings, addresses, hours or quotes. Anything we couldn't verify is marked unknown or credited to the listing it came from.
- Review counts name their source and the date we checked. These numbers change daily.
- No business can buy a score or a rank. Featured Partner spots on Best in LA are promotional, clearly labeled, shown outside the ranking and never scored; a featured shop may also appear in the ranked list. Fabric and tailor lists use the editorial order explained below.
- No business gets a different rubric. We do not use other publishers' sponsored placements (for example their “Featured Partner” labels) when we score a shop.
- Ties are broken by review volume. Closed businesses are listed separately and never ranked.
Corrections
We fix factual errors (addresses, hours, closures, ratings) as soon as we confirm them. Every correction is dated and described on the page where it appears, and the “Last updated” date changes with it.
